On Friday, I met with my supervisor again to actually show her my progress on my internship documents since the mid-semester. I have completed working documents of the "Pop-tab collection flier" the "family dinner flier" "comfy quilts flier" and the Volunteer handbook. I still have one more flier design to complete, which is the "ink jet flier.
The only component of the volunteer handbook that I actually completed was the main/title page. My supervisor loved the color and visual designs that I used to create the page. I have ideas to add pictures to the document, but this involves actually getting all the staff members together (which is actually a difficult task because everyone is always busy) and waiting until the kitchen space is complete. Adding pictures to the document will eliminate some unnecessary white space and add spice to the hand book.
On Tuesday, I will be workshopping my internship materials in class. I am working diligently to add more elements to the volunteer handbook. I want to cut down the number of pages without taking away from the handbook as a whole. InDesign is still pretty difficult to master but I am getting use to it. I know I will get a lot of useful feedback from my peers on improving my designs for my internship.

You should ask yourself, "What is the age group for this handbook?"
ReplyDeleteRight now, I'm helping with a volunteer manual/handbook myself. Most of the volunteers we get at Positive Spin are about my age (18-25). So if they are like me then it's very unlikely that they ever received a manual/handbook for a job before. My objectives became, keep it simply, keep it short, and make it for easy reference. The pictures I included feature many people this age too.
It's interesting that you get to work with visual/graphic aspects of your work. With my internship, I deal solely with TEXT and nothing else - I was working with their newsletter here, and even though some of the text was wrapping (or .. going to the wrong places) because I was altering it on the already-designed page, I wasn't supposed to do anything with it (and was not taught how to do so anyway...)
ReplyDeleteit seems like u have a lot to balance with all the different fliers and u did a good job on the one in class...I feel you definately improved the design of the flier for the handbook.. for all documents you should keep in mind the difference of whether it will be made a flier posted around town or a document in the handbook... good job on the pop tabs document keep up the good work
ReplyDeleteI agree, you did a good job today presenting your flier. I'm not sure what the previous one looked like, but I thought the visual elements for the current one were very appealing and eye catching. It may have helped to see it in full color, but I still think it did its job. Jesse also had some great ideas about really considering your audience when you go to actually start on the handbook. I'm not sure what they are expecting from you, but analysis is always a good place to start. Like what are the main goals/purposes of this document? Are they being accomplished? Who will be reading it? Does the text and graphics aid or hinder the application of your demographic? Just the usual analysis before you jump in always helps me to figure out a plan of action. Hope it helps and good luck!!
